Voice Registers and Singing: How are they related?
Voice registers are, in its simplest form, the sections on
which the vocal chords vibrate so as to produce a sound. These
voice registers are related to singing because these are the possible
techniques a singer can use to hit variations of notes. There
are different kinds of voice registers. And these are:
1. The Chest Register.
Technically speaking, these are notes in the range below the
middle C. It is referred to as the chest register because the
pitch or the sound echoes all throughout the chest cavity.
Thus, it creates a relatively deep sound. It is used mainly to
achieve low voices, like that of the bass.
2. The Falsetto.
Falsetto is a sound with which the pitch is a notch or
several notches higher than a person's normal speaking or
singing voice. It is produced when the vocal chords are
expanded and are separated so tight that only the edges of the
vocal cord vibrate. As an example, this register is usually
used by people to reach the alto or the soprano range, even if
they are within the tenor range, or vice versa.
3. Head Register.
Head registers are mostly focused on mechanisms and
not really on pitch. It is the counterpart of the chest
register. The human voice is assumed to be divided into two
registers, and that is the chest register on the lower part,
and the head register on the upper part. It is termed head
register because singers assume that when they sing in this
register, the sound echoes in their heads, and not in their
chests.
4. Whistle Register.
Whistle registers are commonly used by females, as it
is the highest register there is of a human voice. It is also
called as the flageolet register. Pitches produced by this are
typically above E6. It is used in rare cases by
coloratura sopranos as they sing a European classical
music.
5. Middle Register.
This register isn't commonly used. It is a blend of pitches,
commonly the vocal bridge or the passaggio. A singer who can
effectively mix the two pitches together is assumed to have
mastered this registry.
Vocal registrations are concepts that should be mastered in
the field of
singing. These are theories established to determine
the human voice's ability to change, either objectively or
subjectively. Although there are some who believe that these
registrations simply don't exist, a lot still consider it a
science, and not merely a theory.
